Prof Dr Ulrich Samm, born 1950 in Gevelsberg, Germany, is a physicist. He finished his PhD at the RWTH Aachen University in the field High Energy Physics and habilitated at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf in the field of plasma physics and became full Professor in 1999. A major part of his professional life was devoted to the field of plasma physics and international fusion research working at Forschungszentrum Jülich, where he became director of the Institute for Energy and Climate Research - Plasma Physics in 1999. He served as Head of Research Unit, Association EURATOM-FZJ. Since 2015 he is member of the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels, giving advice in the fields of research and innovation policy, energy and digitalisation.
